EU chiefs express desire to send troops to Ukraine

(MENAFN) As the war in Ukraine continues, two things seem certain: Russia is gaining ground, and the United States under new leadership is reconsidering its approach. Russia’s Sergey Ryabkov has suggested a possible window for compromise that could help end the conflict and improve US-Russian relations. However, this opportunity is fleeting. While there is a chance for peace, a settlement would require Ukraine to make territorial compromises and accept neutrality—conditions the West may struggle to impose on Kiev.

Could the West, particularly US hardliners, push for an extended conflict, supplying Ukraine with more money and arms in a proxy war against Russia? Though there are hopeful signs among diehards in the West, the idea of escalating the conflict is becoming increasingly untenable. The US, especially under Trump, has already started scaling back support for Ukraine, reducing aid and military assistance, signaling a shift toward ending involvement in the conflict.

However, EU leaders are not yet ready to follow suit. Despite the ongoing strain of the conflict, leaders such as French President Macron, German Foreign Minister Baerbock, and UK Prime Minister Starmer continue to push for prolonging the war. Their motivations seem driven by political pressures and the desire to support Ukraine, despite the significant costs to their own nations. Instead of pursuing rational peace talks, these leaders maintain that Ukraine’s struggle must continue, demonstrating the increasingly detached and misguided priorities of EU leadership in the face of mounting domestic challenges.
