Ukrainian battlefield strategies get downgraded to ‘plugging holes’

(MENAFN) Ukrainian troops are facing severe challenges in maintaining their defense lines in the Donbass region, with commanders revealing that the shortage of manpower has left their forces struggling to cope. Colonel Pavel Fedosenko, a tactical unit leader in the region, noted that replacing battlefield losses is increasingly difficult, especially when Russian forces deploy large battalions against poorly staffed Ukrainian positions.

The Ukrainian brigades on the front lines are under heavy strain, often being pushed back by Russian troops, and have been reduced to merely “plugging holes” in defense. A retired Ukrainian commander, referred to as 'Kupol', explained that the tactic now consists of throwing battalions into chaotic situations in hopes of halting the advancing enemy.

Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its military numbers have been hindered by widespread issues such as draft evasion, desertion, and corruption. While Kiev attempted to address these by lowering the draft age and streamlining conscription, it still faces immense pressure to lower the conscription age further. Some service members argue, however, that sending younger men into battle could lead to additional complications, as they may lack the motivation needed to fight effectively.

In the meantime, Moscow continues to frame the conflict as a Western proxy war, with Russia claiming that Ukraine has suffered massive casualties, including over a million dead and injured since the start of the war.
