(MENAFN) President Donald trump has directed the Pentagon to devise a plan for a new integrated missile defense system, which he has dubbed "The Iron Dome for America." The system aims to protect the U.S. from advanced threats such as ballistic, hypersonic, and next-generation cruise missiles from various adversaries, including peer, near-peer, and rogue nations.
In an executive order issued on Monday, Trump tasked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth with creating the plan within 60 days. The directive emphasizes the growing complexity and intensity of missile threats, particularly as adversaries develop advanced delivery systems and integrated defense capabilities. The proposed missile shield will include features like space-based interceptors to counter ballistic missiles during their boost phase and enhanced capabilities to prevent missile attacks before they launch.
Though inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, which targets smaller rockets and artillery, the U.S. system would address a broader range of threats. The executive order does not provide cost estimates or a specific timeline for when the missile defense system will be deployed.
