(MENAFN) India has dismissed claims made in a Canadian report alleging foreign interference in the country’s elections, particularly accusations directed at New Delhi. In a strong statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected the findings of the report and countered that it is Canada that has consistently interfered in India’s internal affairs, contributing to illegal migration and criminal activities.
The issue of alleged Indian interference in Canadian elections has been a longstanding source of tension between the two nations. In June 2023, Canada’s National Security Advisor named India as one of the primary sources of foreign interference. Later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed a special commission to investigate these claims. The commission’s final report, released on Tuesday, suggested that India may have used “proxy agents” and covert funding to sway Canadian elections by supporting pro-India candidates.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since September 2023, when Trudeau accused India of involvement in targeting Sikh separatist leaders in Canada. These activists support the Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state. Diplomatic tensions escalated after Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police alleged that Indian officials in Canada were covertly gathering intelligence.
India continues to deny all accusations, claiming the Canadian government is attempting to discredit India for domestic political reasons, particularly regarding the significant Sikh diaspora in Canada.
