White House plans on facilitating access for podcasters, influencers to press

(MENAFN) The administration of U.S. President Donald trump has announced a new policy that will allow podcasters, social media influencers, and independent journalists access to the White House press briefing room, in response to declining trust in traditional media outlets. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the change during a briefing on Tuesday, stating that the Trump administration will now engage with a broader range of media personalities beyond the mainstream press.

Leavitt emphasized that podcasters, influencers, and content creators who are vetted by her office and the Secret Service will be welcome to attend briefings. In a symbolic move, a new "new media seat" will be designated in the briefing room, previously reserved for a staff member, to represent the emerging media landscape. This shift reflects the growing trend of younger Americans turning to alternative sources like podcasts, blogs, and social media for news, rather than traditional television and newspapers.

Polling from Gallup has shown a steady decline in trust toward news outlets since the mid-1970s, with 36% of Americans in 2024 expressing complete distrust in the media. Trump’s relationship with mainstream media has been fraught, with the president often labeling outlets as “enemies of the people” and accusing them of spreading "fake news." This animosity escalated during his first term, particularly in relation to the debunked Russiagate allegations. Meanwhile, legacy media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, and The Washington Post continue to face challenges, including audience losses and revenue declines, prompting internal restructuring.
