(MENAFN) A new poll reveals that Greenlanders are largely opposed to the idea of US President Donald trump purchasing their island from Denmark. The survey, co-commissioned by the Greenland-based newspaper Sermitsiaq and Danish daily Berlingske, shows that just 6% of nearly 500 respondents support the idea of Greenland joining the US. In contrast, 85% rejected the notion, and 9% remained undecided. Additionally, 45% of participants viewed Trump’s interest in Greenland as a threat.
This poll sharply contradicts an earlier survey by the US-based firm Patriot Polling, which claimed that 57% of Greenlanders supported the idea of the US acquiring the territory. However, the US survey did not disclose its methodology or sample size specific to Greenland.
The tension over Greenland’s status escalated following Trump’s ongoing claims of popular support for his acquisition plan. A recent conversation between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also reportedly left Denmark “utterly freaked out.” Amid these diplomatic strains, Denmark announced a new initiative to combat discrimination against Greenlanders, allocating nearly $5 million to strengthen Greenlandic identity and build connections with Denmark over the next four years.
