Latvia pauses training Ukrainian doctors due to Trump command

(MENAFN) Latvia has paused a training initiative for Ukrainian doctors following an executive order by US President Donald trump that suspended American foreign aid for 90 days. This decision has affected USAID-funded programs, including one at the National Rehabilitation Center Vaivari, which has been training Ukrainian medical professionals since 2014. The program had allowed 187 Ukrainian doctors to enhance their skills in rehabilitating injured troops, with funding covering travel, accommodation, and the salaries of Latvian experts.

Stella Lapina, the head of Vaivari, expressed hope that the training program could resume after the freeze ends. She acknowledged the significant US support for Ukraine and emphasized the center’s commitment to continuing its assistance.

Russian officials, including spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, criticized Latvia for halting the program, mocking the country’s reliance on US aid while calling into question its commitment to Ukraine without foreign support. Latvia, which has been a staunch ally of Ukraine, has provided over €500 million in military aid to the country since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

The decision reflects broader tensions in the region, with Moscow accusing Latvia of exacerbating the conflict by supporting Ukraine.
