Hindus In America Confront The Complex Legacy Of Caste

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Caste discrimination is increasingly a topic of discussion among Hindu Americans. As institutions adopt anti-caste policies, debates intensify. These discussions reflect a growing awareness of caste's implications in the U.S.

Karthikeyan Shanmugam, an IT engineer from Tamil Nadu, moved to the Bay Area nearly ten years ago. He found himself surprised by the conversations surrounding caste among fellow Hindus. Many seemed unaware of caste's significance and its impact on social dynamics.

In 2016, the California Department of Education faced criticism from Hindu advocacy groups over the portrayal of caste in social studies textbooks. This incident highlighted differing views within the community regarding caste's relevance outside India. Shanmugam believes that caste must be addressed directly, emphasizing that ignoring it will not lead to solutions.

The debate escalated last year when Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have recognized caste as a protected category against discrimination. This decision followed intense lobbying from various groups, reflecting deep divisions within the Hindu community . Some argue that recognizing caste as discrimination misrepresents Hinduism and unfairly targets South Asians.

Despite this backlash, over a dozen universities and companies have begun to include caste in their discrimination policies. For instance, Seattle became the first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination earlier this year. These actions signal a shift toward acknowledging caste-related issues in American workplaces and educational settings.

Shanmugam co-founded the Ambedkar King Study Circle to raise awareness about caste issues. He draws inspiration from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, an advocate for Dalit rights and a key figure in India's constitution drafting. Shanmugam's experiences illustrate how caste biases persist even in professional environments.

A survey by Equality Labs revealed that 67% of Dalits reported experiencing unfair treatment at work due to their caste identity. Additionally, 41% faced discrimination in educational settings. These statistics highlight the urgent need for policies addressing these inequalities.

The conversation about caste is not just about historical injustices; it also raises questions about identity and representation. Critics of anti-caste legislation argue that focusing on caste may create divisions within communities. A report from Rutgers University suggested that addressing caste disparities could unintentionally increase bias against upper-caste individuals.
