Sarens Executes Heavy Rigging Operations at Saudi Arabian Gas Field

(MENAFN- LeanFactor Global Communication) Since October 2023, Sarens has been supporting the Jafurah gas project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Jafurah Gas processing facility is part of a surface network aimed at developing the Jafurah gas field, the largest liquid-rich shale and Natural gas source in the Middle East.

This network will include an NGL fractionation plant, a gas-compression system, and approximately 1.500 kilometres of main transfer pipelines, flow lines, and gas-gathering pipelines to ensure the reliable delivery of natural gas and condensates.

Sarens is performing heavy rigging work on behalf of Samsung Saudi Arabia Co. Ltd., selected thanks to our international experience and previous work with Aramco and Samsung on module transport and heavy rigging.

By August 2024, Sarens had completed the weighing, transportation, and installation of 34 modules from the yard to the site, as well as the lifting and installation of 70 out of the 108 planned heavy equipment items, to be finished by the end of 2024. The work utilised 120 axle lines of SPMTs, along with 1.250-tonne, 2 x 600-tonne, and 2 x 160-tonne capacity crawler cranes.

Sarens performed lifting of heavy items such as the amine absorber and demethaniser, executing 108 planned lifts in total. These loads weighed up to 550 tonnes and were lifted using a 1.250-tonne capacity crawler crane and a 600-tonne tailing crawler crane. Most of the lifts involved slewing and crawling. Sarens completed the transportation and installation of the 34 modules, which weighed a total of 18.535 tonnes and had an average size of 40 x 20 x 36 metres, by the end of April 2024. Sarens SPMTs transported the modules approximately 2,5 kilometres from the module yard to the installation site.

The project has required close coordination with various parties as other activities continue in the immediate vicinity of the work. The site is located in a remote desert area, with the nearest town 80 kilometres away. It is subject to adverse weather conditions, including heavy winds, sandstorms, fog, and intense heat.

Sarens has been providing all equipment and manpower for this project. Most of the equipment arrived via road transport from other parts of Saudi Arabia, as well as by sea from Europe and Asia. The weighing cells were shipped by air freight. After the challenge of clearing customs, it took, on average, about one week to set up each piece of equipment.

“The completion of this project in the Saudi Arabian desert stands as a significant achievement for Sarens”, said Operation Manager Ms. Nour Jamal. “Faced with extreme heat, a remote location, a very busy work site, and an aggressive schedule, the Sarens team demonstrated our ability to overcome obstacles through meticulous planning, technical expertise, and effective coordination. The success of this project highlights Sarens’ capacity to handle complex operations in even the most challenging environments, setting a high standard for future projects in similar conditions.
