(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, August 30. Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat, has held a significant working meeting focused on climate change issues and the implementation of international climate agreements as part of the UNDP's“Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Awaza” project, Trend reports via UNDP Turkmenistan.

The meeting was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and involved various ministries and agencies.

The primary aim of the meeting was to update representatives on the preparation of Turkmenistan's Fourth National Communication (NC4) and First Biennial Report (BR1) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Discussions also covered the implementation of Turkmenistan's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, the Global Methane Commitment, and preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP29) in November 2024 in Baku.

The meeting sought to enhance coordination among Turkmenistan's state bodies and bolster efforts in joint projects with the UNDP to advance the country's climate commitments. This collaboration aims to invigorate Turkmenistan's progress in fulfilling global climate agreements.

In Turkmenistan, UNDP oversees one of the largest environmental programs and serves as a key development partner for international funds like the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). UNDP supports Turkmenistan's adherence to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), integrates environmental issues into national strategies, and implements programs to enhance the country's resilience to climate change.

"Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Awaza" project aims to address the environmental challenges posed by rapid urbanization in the cities. It focuses on three main components: improving energy efficiency and sustainability in Ashgabat's urban infrastructure, implementing eco-friendly tourism practices in Awaza, and developing national policies to support green urban practices. The project seeks to enhance urban planning, reduce resource consumption and waste, and promote responsible environmental stewardship while boosting international recognition and investment.
