Cherif, Ahmed Off To A Flying Start As Medal Hunt Begins

Paris: Qatar's Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan yesterday began their Paris Olympic journey on a winning note, defeating World No.13 Italian pair of Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava in straight sets (21-19, 21-18) in their opening match.

The Pool A match which took place at the foot of the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Cheirf and Tijan, who three years ago clinched the country's first medal in beach volleyball, will next take on world's number one men's pair, Sweden's David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig, in their second Pool A match tomorrow. They will meet Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher in their third and final Pool A match on August 1.

Earlier, yesterday, Team Qatar swimmer Abdulaziz Al Obaidly yesterday took part in the 100m breaststroke qualifying at the Paris 2024 Olympics yesterday where he finished sixth in Heat 2 clocking 1:04.31.

Al Obaidly later said that he had a good participation and was satisfied with his performance against world's best swimmers but seeks to improve and reach the best.

“The atmosphere was wonderful and the fans were present in large numbers, even though we are in the qualifying stage, let alone what will happen when the finals come... I felt as if we were in a football stadium,” he explained.

“The fans' cheers were wonderful, and the presence of my father, who is my biggest supporter, as well as my mother, was very influential for me,” Al Obaidly said,
