Beyond Books: Why Skills Matter As Much As Education

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) Once upon a time, Pakistan was among those countries where education was severely lacking. Fortunately, times are changing, and education is becoming more accessible. However, I believe that along with education, learning various skills is equally important. Just as obtaining an education is crucial, acquiring skills is also vital.

Unfortunately, in our country, learning skills is given very little importance. We spend 16 to 18 years just getting an education, but once we graduate, finding a job becomes incredibly difficult. Some people have MPhil, PhDs, or Master's degrees, but sadly, they still struggle to find employment. Half of their lives are spent in education, and the other half in making photocopies of their degrees.

Have you ever wondered why this happens? Why can't we find jobs? I believe one major reason is that our colleges and universities focus solely on textbooks and not on teaching skills. Skills like communication, CV writing, self-confidence, public speaking, and others. If these skills were taught alongside the curriculum, it could significantly reduce the problem of unemployment.

You might be wondering, what do skills have to do with getting a job? Let me explain.

For example, if universities arranged classes on CV writing skills and taught students how to create a compelling CV, those students would be better prepared when they start looking for jobs. They would be able to create an impressive CV and succeed in securing good jobs. Often, people don't know how to create an effective CV and end up with a generic one that doesn't qualify them for the job they want.

Let's look at another example. Many people have weak communication skills and lack self-confidence, making it difficult for them to convey their thoughts effectively. When they sit for an interview and are asked various questions, they struggle to respond confidently, which often results in them not getting the job.

There are many countries in the world like China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Finland, and Singapore. These are some of the most developed countries, where students are taught various soft skills along with education. Because just as education is necessary, learning skills are equally important. Even if someone has the highest degree, without skills, especially communication skills, they cannot progress or secure a good job. Therefore, every educational institution must offer classes on skills alongside regular education. Students need to be aware of how important it is to have skills along with their education. Students should work on their skills, and educational institutions should provide various skill classes.

While education forms the foundation, skills are the tools that shape our careers. Balancing both can lead to a brighter future.
