'Sustainability Deeply Embedded In Qatar Foundation's Principles'

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Foundation (QF) has outlined a roadmap for sustainability, prioritising environmental conservation and sustainable development.

One of the key areas of focus in QF's future plans is the expansion of renewable energy projects, said Dr. Veronica Bermudez, Senior Research Director of the Energy Center at Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), under QF.

In a recent interview with The Peninsula, Dr. Bermudez explained QF's future sustainability plans.“Through investments in solar, the foundation aims to bolster its clean energy portfolio, reduce its carbon footprint, and promote sustainable energy sources to mitigating climate change and advancing sustainable energy practices.”

She said QF is also prioritising energy-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings and facilities.

“QF sets a high standard for sustainable infrastructure, showcasing a commitment to sustainable urban development and responsible resource utilisation,” said Dr. Bermudez.

One of the key elements relies in QF's vision for establishing a research and innovation hub dedicated to sustainability-focused initiatives underscoring its commitment to driving innovation and collaboration in the environmental sector.

“By fostering partnerships among researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry stakeholders, Qatar Foundation aims to catalyse the development of innovative solutions to environmental challenges, positioning itself as a leader in sustainability-driven research and innovation,” said Dr. Bermudez. Climate action initiatives feature prominently in QF's future plans, with a focus on building resilience to climate change impacts and promoting sustainable practices.

“By implementing adaptation strategies, advocating for sustainable water management practices, and raising awareness about climate change mitigation efforts, the foundation demonstrates a proactive stance towards addressing climate challenges and promoting environmental sustainability,” said Dr. Bermudez.

Community engagement programmes are a vital component of QF's sustainability strategy, with an emphasis on fostering sustainability awareness, eco-conscious practices, and community involvement in environmental conservation activities.

“By expanding its community engagement initiatives, the foundation aims to cultivate a culture of sustainability among its stakeholders, empowering communities to actively participate in environmental stewardship efforts,” said Dr. Bermudez. She emphasised that at QF, sustainability is not just a buzzword but a guiding principle deeply embedded in its principles.

“Due to this sustainability is integrated into every facet of the operations, driving positive change and long-term impact. Environmental sustainability takes centre stage at QF, with (as already indicated) a focus on initiatives such as energy conservation, waste reduction, recycling programmes, and the adoption of renewable energy sources,” said Dr. Bermudez.

“Embracing green building practices, water conservation efforts, and sustainable landscaping, QF strives to minimise its environmental footprint and lead by example in promoting sustainable practices within its facilities and operations,” she added.

Complementing its environmental initiatives and through investments in education, healthcare, and community development programmes, QF seeks to enhance social well-being, foster diversity and inclusion, and empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.

“In alignment with its holistic sustainability approach, QF champions economic sustainability by driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic diversification,” Dr. Bermudez.
