Israeli security chiefs support Gaza ceasefire, rapid withdrawal plan

(MENAFN) According to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation "Kan," all top Israeli security officials have unanimously endorsed a plan for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip within six weeks, contingent upon a ceasefire agreement and a prisoner exchange. The consensus among Defense Minister Yoav Galant, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Mossad Director David Barnea, and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar is that this timeframe would prevent Hamas fighters from significantly regrouping or rearming.

The security leaders have advised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that now is an opportune moment to prioritize the release of detainees, given their limited time in captivity. They also highlighted the need to address issues such as control over the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border and the relocation of Gaza residents to the northern part of the Strip. Chief of Staff Halevi emphasized the importance of combining military pressure with diplomatic efforts to move towards an agreement.

Despite the security leaders' support, Netanyahu has not fully acquiesced to their recommendations. This stance is expected to influence Israel's response to mediators when talks resume on Thursday, although there remains a possibility that Hamas could reject the proposed terms.
