Serbian president informs German chancellor to look for crucial Ukraine peace agreement

(MENAFN) Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, urging Western leaders to prioritize a peace deal regardless of the terms. In an interview with the German publication Handelsblatt, Vucic emphasized the worsening situation in Ukraine and advised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is scheduled to visit Belgrade soon, to secure a ceasefire quickly. According to Vucic, the specifics of the agreement can be addressed later, but the priority should be halting the conflict as soon as possible.

Vucic briefly interacted with Scholz at the European Political Community summit in the United Kingdom, where he observed a prevailing sentiment among attendees that focused solely on Ukraine's victory and Russia's defeat. The Serbian leader criticized this stance for its lack of emphasis on dialogue and solutions. He expressed concern that his advocacy for a more pragmatic approach to peace might not be well received by the international community.

Despite European Union pressure to align with sanctions against Russia, Vucic has maintained Serbia's neutrality in the conflict. He has previously resisted joining Western sanctions and has been vocal about the need for a balanced approach to resolving the crisis. Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also attempted to broker a ceasefire through a diplomatic tour, but his proposal was rejected by Ukraine, the United States, and the European Unioin.
