American Republicans summon Secret Service chief

(MENAFN) The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has issued a subpoena requiring Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify regarding her agency's "total failure" in preventing the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Initially, the Secret Service confirmed Cheatle's appearance, but House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas blocked her from testifying.

In a letter to Cheatle on Wednesday, Committee Chairman James Comer criticized the lack of transparency and cooperation, stating it further questioned her capability to lead the Secret Service and necessitated the subpoena.

The incident in question occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped death as a gunman’s bullet grazed his ear. The shooter, firing from a rooftop 500 feet away, killed one rally attendee and injured two others before being fatally shot by Secret Service snipers.

The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks but has not disclosed his motive. Many details about the events preceding the attack remain unclear, with Republican commentators accusing the Secret Service of negligence in the critical moments leading up to the shooting.
