Iran’s caviar exports surge 41 percent in Q1 yr/yr

(MENAFN) Abbas Mokhtari, the director general of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture's Office of Quality Improvement, Processing, and Aquatic Market, announced a substantial increase in the value of Iran’s caviar exports during the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20-June 20). Compared to the same period last year, there was an impressive rise of over 41 percent. Specifically, Iran exported 1,353 kilograms of caviar valued at USD721,000, which also represents an 82 percent increase in terms of weight year on year.

In addition to caviar, the overall value of Iran’s fishery exports saw a notable increase of over 30 percent during the same timeframe. Mokhtari highlighted that the country exported 73,369 tons of fishery products worth USD121.4 million in the first quarter, compared to 52,282 tons valued at USD93.1 million in the same period last year. This marks a significant 40 percent rise in terms of export weight.

According to the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Iran's fishery exports in the last Iranian calendar year (ended on March 19) grew by three percent, surpassing USD310 million. The total weight of exported fishery products reached 149,000 metric tons, reflecting a 12 percent increase compared to the previous year. Notably, shrimp exports contributed USD98.5 million, accounting for 32 percent of the total export value of fishery products. However, this represented a 26 percent decrease in value compared to the prior year, with Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and China being the primary destinations.

The report also highlighted that fisheries exports constitute less than 70 percent of Iran's total exports, with the UAE, China, Russia, and Iraq being the largest markets. On the import side, Iran brought in 24,000 metric tons of fishery products valued at USD72 million last year, demonstrating a substantial increase of 121 percent in weight and 113 percent in value.

The continuous growth and development of Iran’s aquaculture industry have positioned the country as a model in the region and globally. This remarkable progress underscores the significant strides made in enhancing the country's aquaculture and fishery sectors.
