Media reports India improving explosive twice as powerful as TNT

(MENAFN) A private Indian defense firm has successfully developed a groundbreaking explosive that is reported to be more than twice as powerful as traditional TNT. Named SEBEX 2, this innovative formulation has received certification from the Indian Navy and is designed to enhance the lethality of various munitions, including bombs, artillery shells, and warheads, without adding extra weight.

The explosive was created by Economic Explosives, a subsidiary of Solar Industries, which is based in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This development is part of the Indian government’s 'Make in India' initiative, aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing within the defense sector.

In a recent announcement, the Indian Navy stated that SEBEX 2 will significantly "enhance the potency and efficiency" of the nation’s weaponry and ammunition. Officials from Solar Industries described SEBEX 2 as a potential game changer for the Indian armed forces, highlighting its substantial increase in firepower. They emphasized that this new explosive formulation delivers a much more powerful blast effect compared to any currently available solid explosive.

According to the Economic Times, India's existing most powerful conventional explosive, which is used in the warhead of the BrahMos missile—co-developed with Russia—has a TNT equivalence of approximately 1.50. Furthermore, Solar Industries is reportedly working on an even more potent explosive that is projected to be 2.3 times more powerful than TNT.

The emergence of SEBEX 2 not only promises to bolster India’s military capabilities but also holds significant export potential. As military forces around the globe seek to enhance the lethality of their existing weapon systems, this new explosive may attract interest from international defense markets, further solidifying India’s position in the global defense landscape.
