Election Tensions Rise: Over 70 Detained In Venezuela Amidst Campaign Unrest

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) In just ten days since the Venezuelan presidential campaign kicked off, security forces have detained 71 opposition supporters.

The focus of these detentions includes allies of Edmundo González Urrutia, a prominent alternative candidate following legal hurdles faced by leader María Corina Machado.

This series of detentions, documented by the NGO Peace Laboratory, reveals an intensified crackdown on dissent.

The government's reaction to González's widespread rallies highlights the challenge posed by Machado's rising influence among those critical of the incumbent regime.

Key figures from Machado's party, Vente Venezuela , are among those imprisoned, with six seeking asylum in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.

Arrests span several states and involve the closure of businesses like Pancho Grill, which had provided services to the opposition.

A notable arrest was that of Ricardo Albacete Vidal in Caracas. The 72-year-old Spanish citizen had hosted Machado in Táchira.

Unidentified men took him, later justified by Prosecutor Tarek William Saab as an investigation into alleged electoral sabotage.

Other arrests include truck driver Elisaúl Rodríguez, accused of a hit-and-run after an opposition event, and two companions also detained.

Moreover, Ángel Aristimuño and Dennis Martínez, opposition activists, faced arrest in eastern Venezuela.

The campaign has also seen 26 instances of candidate harassment and 11 roadblocks, disrupting opposition movements.

Furthermore, four independent media outlets were digitally blocked, impacting information flow.

Amidst increasing detentions, Perkins Rocha, a lawyer with Machado's campaign, urged the National Electoral Council to ensure fair play.

He emphasized the importance of peace for free elections, a principle agreed in the Barbados Agreement but now overshadowed by political instability.

As the July 28 election date approaches, the specter of political violence looms larger.
