United Kingdom launches comprehensive defense review amid global instability

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated a thorough review aimed at bolstering the United Kingdom's defences in response to what he described as a "more dangerous and less stable world," according to a report on Tuesday. The review, announced by Starmer, underscores a commitment to responsibly increase spending to support the British armed forces, which he noted have faced significant reductions in recent years.

Starmer's decision follows his pledge at the NATO summit in Washington last week to raise defence spending to 2.5% of the UK's GDP. The Ministry of Defence has outlined the review's objectives, emphasizing a focus on strengthening internal security measures, affirming support for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions, and ensuring the maintenance and modernization of nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Led by former NATO Secretary General George Robertson, the review will involve collaboration with military and foreign policy experts such as Fiona Hill and Richard Barrons. Its comprehensive scope aims to assess current defence strategies, identify vulnerabilities, and propose strategic enhancements to safeguard the UK's national security interests in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
