NATO criticizes China over relations with Russia

(MENAFN) NATO has sharply criticized China, labeling it a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. This accusation has led to an outraged response from Beijing, which denounced the United States-led military alliance for its "Cold War mentality and aggressive rhetoric."

China and Russia have framed their relationship as a “no-limits” partnership, a bond that has deepened significantly since the West implemented extensive sanctions on Moscow following the onset of the Ukraine crisis. In May, during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Beijing, both leaders announced a “new era” in the strategic ties between their nations.

During NATO's 75th anniversary summit held in Washington, D.C., NATO members condemned the growing relationship between Beijing and Moscow. In a declaration, they stated that China continues to "challenge our interests, security, and values." The document, signed by the heads of state and government of NATO countries, expressed deep concern over the expanding strategic partnership between Russia and China, emphasizing their collaborative efforts to undermine and reshape the rules-based international order.

Furthermore, NATO accused China of bolstering the Russian defense industry through the transfer of dual-use materials and components, as well as engaging in “malicious cyber and hybrid activities.” In response to these allegations, a spokesperson for the Chinese Mission to the EU called the statements "provocative, filled with obvious lies and smears." The spokesperson indicated that Beijing has formally protested these claims to the NATO bloc.

The Chinese mission reiterated that China is “not the architect of the Ukraine crisis” and asserted that its goal is to “promote peace talks and seek a political settlement” to the ongoing conflict.
