Media reports Russia confiscating ownership of previous Ukrainian leader`s chocolate factory

(MENAFN) According to a report by RIA Novosti, Russia has officially taken ownership of shares in a confectionary factory previously owned by former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The Federal Bailiff Service confirmed that following a court ruling, shares of the Roshen factory in Lipetsk, western Russia, have been transferred to state ownership. This decision stems from a longstanding investigation into allegations of tax evasion against the company.

Dmitry Aristov, head of the bailiff service, affirmed the court's decision to transfer ownership of JSC Lipetsk Confectionery Factory Roshen to the Russian government. The Oktyabrsky District Court in Lipetsk had granted a request from a deputy prosecutor general to nationalize Roshen's shares, citing allegations that the factory's owners had been involved in financing Ukraine's Armed Forces and supporting anti-Russian activities.

The Roshen Corporation, founded by Poroshenko in 1996, acquired the Lipetsk factory in 2001. However, production at the facility faced interruptions, notably in 2014 when its local manager was implicated in a criminal case related to trademark misuse for illicit profit. Operations ceased entirely in 2017 after a period of resumed production.

Poroshenko, who promised to divest from Roshen if elected president in 2014 but was unable to find a buyer, transferred his shares in the corporation to an independent blind trust in January 2016.
