RMTO: Iran’s road commodity transit surges by 70 percent in 3 months annually

(MENAFN) The transit of commodities through Iran's roads increased by 70 percent in the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20-June 20) compared to the same period last year, as reported by Darioush Amani, the Head of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO). Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Amani revealed that approximately 4.5 million tons of goods were transited via Iran’s roads during this period, according to an Iranian news agency.

Amani also highlighted that a total of 147 million tons of goods were transited via Iranian roads in the previous year, a significant increase from earlier years. Furthermore, 515 million tons of goods were transported across the country last year, reflecting a 10 percent rise compared to the preceding year.

The continuous increase in transit records and the growing interest from neighboring, regional, and extra-regional countries in Iran’s transit and logistics capabilities underscore the success of the 13th government's strategic approach to enhancing economic relations with its neighbors. This approach emphasizes the development of comprehensive economic ties through transit initiatives.

Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash noted that the "Iran Way" initiative, introduced by the current Iranian government, aims to facilitate the access of neighboring countries to international waters by using Iran as a transit route. This initiative highlights Iran's potential as a key transit hub.

In the previous Iranian calendar year 1401 (ending on March 20, 2023), 10.8 million tons of commodities were transited through the country, as announced by the Transport Ministry. This year, the Transport Ministry prioritizes playing a significant role in major international programs, such as China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), to further develop transport relations with both regional and extra-regional target countries.
