Orban claims that war has become NATO`s schema

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sharply criticized NATO, accusing the military alliance of abandoning its original defensive posture in favor of aggressive militarization, which he claims has made warmongering its primary agenda. Orban, known for his vocal opposition to Western involvement in the Ukraine conflict, expressed concerns over escalating tensions that could potentially lead to a direct military confrontation between NATO and Russia, warning of catastrophic consequences.

During a surprise visit to Moscow, Orban met with Russian President Vladimir Putin under the banner of a "peacekeeping mission," aiming to explore avenues for peacefully resolving the Ukraine conflict. Despite acknowledging significant differences between Moscow and Kiev, Orban emphasized the importance of establishing dialogue as a critical first step towards conflict resolution.

In a published op-ed in Newsweek, Orban highlighted Hungary's longstanding membership in NATO since 1999, detailing Budapest's active participation in various NATO operations and its commitment to meeting the alliance's defense spending targets. However, he lamented that NATO's current trajectory diverges sharply from its original mission as a "peace project" and a defensive military alliance, criticizing its shift towards offensive actions and geopolitical maneuvering.

Orban's critique underscores growing skepticism within certain NATO member states about the alliance's evolving role and strategic priorities, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. His statements reflect broader debates within NATO regarding its posture towards Russia and the implications for regional stability and international relations.
