Media reports NATO leader`s push for Ukraine funding unsuccessful

(MENAFN) Several media outlets have reported that NATO member states have declined a proposal by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to allocate EUR40 billion (USD43 billion) annually for aid to Ukraine. Instead, member countries have agreed to designate this amount for Kiev's needs in the upcoming year, according to Reuters.

Stoltenberg had been advocating for a substantial and sustained funding commitment during NATO's upcoming summit in Washington, DC, scheduled for July 9-11. He emphasized that NATO allies had collectively provided significant military support to Ukraine since 2022, totaling approximately EUR40 billion each year, and he sought to ensure continued support through annual fresh funding.

Reports from Deutsche Presse-Agentur and Reuters indicated that Stoltenberg's original proposal faced resistance from member states, leading to its rejection. The decision was reportedly based on opposition within NATO delegations, with countries expressing a preference to reassess contributions in future summits rather than committing to Stoltenberg's proposed long-term funding plan.

Stoltenberg, in addressing the media, also highlighted challenges in aligning allied commitments, noting delays in fulfilling promises made by European allies compared to the United States' efforts in securing supplementary aid for Ukraine. The decision underscores ongoing complexities within NATO regarding financial commitments and strategic priorities in supporting Ukraine amidst geopolitical tensions.
