Microsoft reveals significant investment in data centers in Aragon

(MENAFN) Microsoft is set to invest 2.2 billion euros (USD2.37 billion) in a new data center project in Aragon, as announced by the government of this northeastern Spanish region on Wednesday. This initiative aims to transform Aragon into a hub for cloud computing. Combined with other projects announced by the tech giant in recent years, Microsoft's total planned investments in the region now amount to 6.7 billion euros, according to Jorge Azcon, the regional president of Aragon.

This significant investment decision comes just six weeks after Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, revealed its own 15.7 billion euro (USD16.89 billion) investment plan to expand data center capacity in Aragon over the next decade. Azcon described Microsoft's announcement as "amazing news for the Aragon economy," emphasizing the substantial economic benefits expected from this investment, including the potential to attract similar decisions from other companies.

Microsoft initially announced the new data center project in October, stating its goal to "provide cloud computing services to European companies and government institutions." However, the specifics of the investment size were not disclosed at that time. According to an analysis by IDC, cited by Microsoft, the new data center project, which will be developed on an 88-hectare campus, is expected to create 2,100 jobs between 2026 and 2030.
