Hurricane Beryl tears through northeast Venezuela, killing 2, affects thousands

(MENAFN) At least 2 people have been reported dead, 5 are missing, and 25,000 individuals have been affected as Hurricane Beryl tore through Sucre state in northeast Venezuela, according to Interior and Justice Minister Remigio Ceballos on Tuesday.

"To date we can say that, unfortunately, two people have died, five are missing, and we are in a permanent, direct search [for survivors and victims]," Ceballos reported to a state-run news broadcaster. He emphasized the extensive impact, noting that "25,000 people [have been] affected by the rains."

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez announced via social media platform X that a commission composed of ministers is en route to Sucre to manage the crisis and provide assistance.

Early Tuesday, the city of Cumanacoa in Sucre experienced severe flooding due to relentless rains brought by Beryl, which caused the Manzanares River to overflow. The category 5 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 270 km per hour, moved at 35 km per hour across the Venezuelan Caribbean, as per a morning report from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The hurricane's devastating impact underscores the urgent need for coordinated rescue and relief efforts as authorities work to address the immediate needs of affected communities and search for the missing.
