Putin visits Kazakhstan for SCO summit, bilateral talks


(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Kazakhstan on Wednesday to participate in talks focused on regional security, defense issues, and a series of bilateral meetings with key international leaders, including officials from China and Turkey. The Kremlin announced this visit through its official website, highlighting Putin's engagements in Astana, the capital city, where members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will convene on July 3rd and 4th.

According to the Kremlin's statement, the SCO summit will serve as a platform for discussing current regional dynamics and opportunities to enhance multifaceted cooperation within the organization. The summit aims to bolster the SCO's operational effectiveness and expand collaborative efforts among member states.

Yuri Ushakov, Presidential Assistant to Vladimir Putin, elaborated on the agenda, noting that Putin's schedule includes bilateral meetings on July 3rd before the official commencement of the SCO summit. These meetings are set to begin with Mongolian President Khurelsukh, followed by talks with Azerbaijani President Aliyev, Pakistani leader Sharif, Turkish President Erdogan, and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Before joining an informal dinner for summit participants, Putin is scheduled to meet with Kazakhstan's President Tokayev, the host of the summit.

On July 4th, Ushakov mentioned that Putin's agenda will primarily focus on participating in summit events, with some potential for brief bilateral interactions during the day. The SCO summit in Astana is themed "Strengthening multilateral dialogue – striving for sustainable peace and development" and will also feature participation from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
