Russian Gazprom to start supplying natural gas to China via far eastern route in 2027

(MENAFN) gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller announced on Friday that supplies of Russian natural gas to China via the Far Eastern route are scheduled to commence in 2027, as reported on the company’s Telegram channel. This new route will transport gas from the offshore fields near Sakhalin Island to China, following an agreement between Moscow and Beijing finalized in February 2023.

Once fully operational, the Far Eastern route will have an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters (bcm). It includes the construction of a cross-border section across the Ussuri River, linking the existing Russian pipeline network to China's city of Hulin.

Miller highlighted that when combined with the already operational Power of Siberia pipeline, which started delivering gas to China in 2019 under a 30-year agreement, Russia will become China's largest gas supplier. The Power of Siberia is set to achieve its full annual capacity of 38 bcm by next year, according to Miller, with Gazprom steadily increasing gas exports to China through this pipeline.

Additionally, Moscow and Beijing are nearing completion of negotiations for the construction of Power of Siberia 2, a mega gas pipeline expected to transport up to 50 bcm annually from Russia's Yamal Region through Mongolia to China. This project represents another significant step in strengthening energy ties between Russia and China, bolstering their strategic partnership in the global energy market.
