powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake strike off coast of Peru, prompting tsunami warnings

(MENAFN) On Monday, a significant earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Peru, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 8.8 kilometers from the Atiquipa area, with a depth of ten kilometers. Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated no immediate threat, but later updated its advisory to warn of potential tsunami waves reaching up to three meters high along certain coastlines.

This recent seismic event follows another strong earthquake in Peru the previous Sunday, which registered above 6 on the Richter scale but did not cause any reported damage. Peru, situated within the Pacific "Ring of Fire," experiences frequent and intense seismic activity due to its location along the tectonically active western coast of the Americas. The region is known for its susceptibility to numerous earthquakes each year, highlighting the ongoing geological challenges faced by communities in the area.
