UK FM deliver blow to Ukraine`s hopes to join NATO

(MENAFN) United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron has delivered a blow to Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO, stating that Ukraine will not receive an invitation at the bloc's upcoming summit in Washington next month. Cameron clarified this stance during a phone call with Russian pranksters posing as former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, which was later made public.

According to Cameron, the United States' lack of support for Ukraine's NATO membership hampers any possibility of extending an invitation. Instead, he emphasized that the summit will likely focus on issuing a strong declaration of support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Cameron acknowledged his personal support for Ukraine's eventual inclusion in NATO but stressed the need for unity and avoiding public discord between NATO and Ukraine ahead of the summit. He highlighted the importance of crafting supportive language that aligns NATO's stance with Ukraine's strategic objectives without causing division.

Since NATO's initial announcement in 2008 that Ukraine would become a member, followed by Ukraine's declaration in 2019 of NATO membership as a strategic goal, the path towards full integration has faced geopolitical challenges and shifting international dynamics. Cameron's statements underscore the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding Ukraine's NATO ambitions and the cautious approach adopted by NATO members ahead of the upcoming summit.
