Malaysian Premier announces that Malaysia seeking to join BRICS

(MENAFN) Malaysia is gearing up to join the BRICS economic bloc, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announcing that the country will soon begin the formal application process. In an interview with the Chinese media outlet Guancha published on Sunday, the 77-year-old leader confirmed the decision, stating, "We have made our policy clear and we have made our decision. We will start the formal process soon." Anwar mentioned that they are awaiting feedback from the South African government and had recently discussed the matter with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

BRICS, initially founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, welcomed South Africa in 2011. Recently, the bloc expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), though it retained its original acronym. Malaysia's membership could hold strategic importance due to its location along the Malacca Strait, a crucial shipping route between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Prime Minister Anwar emphasized Malaysia's relief at the emergence of a multipolar world, highlighting the role of BRICS and China in providing "a glimmer of hope that there are checks and balances in the world." He criticized the West's attempts to "control the discourse" globally, asserting that independent nations should be free from such influence as they are no longer under colonial rule. Anwar's statements underscore Malaysia's desire for a more balanced global power structure and its commitment to expressing its sovereignty on the international stage.
