Musk calls for designation of Ukrainian NGO as terrorist group

(MENAFN) Elon Musk has voiced strong opposition against Texty.org.ua, a Ukrainian NGO, which recently published a comprehensive report identifying influential American figures purportedly aligned with Russian propaganda narratives on the Ukraine conflict. Musk, among others, was listed in this database, prompting his call for Texty.org.ua to be classified as a terrorist organization.

Texty.org.ua's report, released last week, delineated what it described as an "ecosystem" of individuals and entities in the United States disseminating messages paralleling Russian propaganda themes regarding Ukraine. The NGO's findings have sparked controversy and drawn attention from lawmakers, including Republican members of the House Appropriations Committee.

In response to the report, Representative Jim Banks successfully pushed for an amendment to the State Department's 2025 budget markup, preventing Texty.org.ua from receiving United States funding and advocating for further measures against the organization. Musk, reacting on social media, endorsed the move and went further, advocating for Texty.org.ua's inclusion on the list of sanctioned terrorist groups.

Banks argued that federal support should not be extended to foreign entities that engage in what he perceives as intimidation tactics against United States citizens and lawmakers. He highlighted alleged connections between Texty.org.ua and Anatoly Bondarenko, one of its co-founders who also participates in programs like 'TechCamp,' which trains foreign journalists, NGOs, and activists.

In defense, Texty.org.ua characterized its report as an act of "data journalism" aimed at highlighting perceived parallels between American discourse and Russian propaganda. The organization condemned efforts to restrict its activities as an infringement on freedom of speech and an unjust targeting of Ukrainian citizens.

The controversy surrounding Texty.org.ua underscores the complexities of information warfare and international relations, where allegations of propaganda and censorship intersect with broader debates over national security and freedom of expression. The unfolding situation may impact diplomatic relations and policies related to foreign funding and civil society engagement in the United States and beyond.
