Media reports blast shakes Polish arms plant that provides for Ukraine

(MENAFN) A tragic incident unfolded at the Mesko arms factory in Poland, a crucial supplier of ammunition to Ukraine, as an explosion and subsequent fire rocked the facility in Skarzysko Kamienna. Reports from RMF24 indicate that the explosion occurred at the plant's rocket fuel center, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two others.

According to the broadcaster's website, the explosion claimed the life of a 59-year-old worker, while two additional employees sustained injuries. One of the injured individuals was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation but is reportedly in stable condition, authorities confirmed.

Elzbieta Sreniawska, the president of Mesko, confirmed the incident, describing it as occurring in a warehouse within the rocket fuel center, which was established several years ago. Firefighters swiftly extinguished the blaze, although investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.

Mesko, a state-owned enterprise under Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA, specializes in manufacturing various defense products, including MANPADS, anti-tank missiles, and small arms ammunition. With a century-long history, the company has been a vital supplier of munitions to the Polish Armed Forces and NATO.

Notably, Mesko had recently inked a significant contract in 2022 for the supply of ammunition to Ukraine, underscoring its pivotal role in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts. As investigations into the explosion continue, the tragic incident has brought attention to the risks inherent in the production of critical defense supplies.
