First Edition Of Doha Data Forum Kicks Off

Doha, Qatar: Held under the patronage of H E Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the First Doha Data Forum commenced yesterday.

The forum aimed at carrying out comprehensive data systems and effective decisions, which was hosted by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) in collaboration with national and international partners.

During his opening remarks, PSA President Dr. Saleh bin Mohammad Al Nabit affirmed that the official data and statistics constitute a national treasure that holds a strategic value, which is considered one of the key components of infrastructure that underpins planning and decision-making at both corporate and national levels.

The official said that the forum also aims to strengthen inclusiveness and to ensure the inclusion and participation of all relevant entities, along with maximising the value of data and exploring new collection methods to be effectively analysed, interpreted, and disseminated with the purpose of optimising decision-making processes.

This forum comes in alignment with the recommendations of the 54th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission convened in New York this year. Al Nabit in his keynote speech outlined the completion of the rapid effects that surrounded the global scene known as accelerated evolutions and transformations, especially after Artificial intelligence (AI) came into popularity.

He added that PSA must support the process of digital transformation in the country by equipping the national statistics system with inclusive, accurate, and reliable data that primarily meet the needs of a variety of beneficiaries, simultaneously allowing Qatar to fulfill its obligations in achieving the national development goals, supporting the agenda of the sustainable development goals for 2030, as well as other international obligations.

In a recorded speech, the Director of the United Nations Statistics Division Dr. Stefan Schweinfest addressed the gathering on the power of data in supporting significant transformations, marking this vital forum as a pivotal step towards modernizing the national official statistical system.

The President of the International Association for Official Statistics Dr. Dominik Rozkrut in his speech accentuated the implication of the ongoing forum in supporting digital transformations and data systems. He noted the importance of statistics and data, especially in the era of digital transformation, AI, and machine learning, and their value in official statistics.

Several topics in the panel discussions will be covered revolving around the value of data and statistics in planning and implementing sustainable development, data, and technology infrastructure, the power of data through analytics and visualization, data governance, policy frameworks, and open data and sharing.

The two-day forum, which concludes today seeks to promote the propagation of innovational culture through providing and adopting official statistics and data-based solutions to address national challenges in a variety of sectors.
