Switzerland to hold federal elections on Sunday
(MENAFN) Switzerland is gearing up for its federal elections this Sunday, where voters will choose the 200-seat National Council and the 46-seat Council of States. A significant portion of the 5.5 million eligible voters have already cast their ballots, with 90 percent of them preferring to vote by mail rather than in person.
Starting in early October, the Swiss Postal Administration distributed envelopes containing ballots to voters, and mail-in voting continued until October 19. It's anticipated that voter turnout in Switzerland, which holds elections every four years, will once again fall below 50 percent, continuing a trend that has persisted for nearly five decades.
The most recent poll conducted by the public broadcaster SRG SSR suggests that the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) is set to maintain its position as the largest parliamentary group in the elections. The SVP is expected to secure 28.1 percent of the vote, with concerns about immigration dominating the political discourse, and the Credit Suisse scandal impacting pro-business politicians.
Following the SVP, the center-left Social Democrats are projected to garner 18.3 percent of the vote, and the Center Alliance is expected to receive 14.3 percent, according to the poll. Meanwhile, the Greens are anticipated to dip below 10 percent, losing 3.5 percentage points compared to the previous election and settling at 9.7 percent of the total vote, as per a survey conducted by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the 2023 elections have witnessed a record number of lists and candidates, with 5,909 candidates on 618 lists across the cantons.
