Osteoporosis, a bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density, often affects individuals with a history of fractures or bone breakage. Referred to as the“silent disease,” its symptoms remain unnoticeable until a bone fractures or breaks.

World Osteoporosis Day, celebrated every 20th of October, aims to raise awareness about this disease and reduce its impact on the global economy. Each year, orthopedic specialists introduce new themes for the occasion. This year's theme is“Step up for Bone health – Build Better Bones.”

Highlighting the prevalence of Osteoporosis in Pakistan, Dr. Aimal Sattar, an orthopedic surgeon at Lady Reading Hospital, shared that approximately 27% of the population in Pakistan is affected by this condition. Additionally, women are at a higher risk of Osteoporosis diagnosis compared to men in Pakistan.

Dr. Sattar explained that hormonal changes are one of the key factors contributing to Osteoporosis, particularly in women. Postmenopausal Osteoporosis is prevalent among women after the age of 40-45, while symptoms typically appear in men around 50 to 55.

He also discussed external factors that contribute to the development of Osteoporosis, including excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and inadequate consumption of calcium and vitamin D supplements.

Weight-bearing exercise, as mentioned by the NHS UK, is crucial for preventing bone abnormalities and Osteoporosis in adulthood. Dr. Sattar stressed the importance of educating the public about the regular intake of calcium and vitamin D products. Additionally, raising awareness about the risks of alcohol and smoking can reduce the chances of developing Osteoporosis.
