European Union refuses to steal Russian assets
(MENAFN) Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg has cautioned that the European Union must guarantee it has a strong legal base if it chooses to seize frozen Russian properties and give them to Ukraine.
The diplomat debated that if unsuccessful to do so would greatly smear the bloc’s character.
In a meeting with Austrian broadcaster in a news agency issued on Sunday, Schallenberg insisted that any such seizure of Russian properties “must be watertight” from a legal perspective.
He said that Austria and other European Union associates “are countries with the rule of law,” and that they have to employ that method in global affairs.
Based on Schallenberg, this is one of the essential differences between Western European countries and Russia.
The Austrian minister said that “expropriation is a massive intervention, according to law.”
