The late Sheikh Jaber believed in the important role of women in the development and advacement of the State of Kuwait in all fields.
Parliamentary elections in 2006 witnessed participation of women for the first time - running for elections and casting ballots. But it was only until 2008 when four female candidates won elections.

Women in general represent 59 percent of total workforce, higher than global average of 39 percent, contributing significantly to achieving 2035 New Kuwait vision.
The Constitution of Kuwait stipulates equality amongst men and women. The country abides by a 1994 agreement to eliminate discrimination against women, as well as having a number of legislations that support, promote and protect women.
The government created a ministerial portfolio dedicated to women and childhood affairs, reflecting the political leadership's keenness on empowering of women and promotion of their civil, political, economic and social rights.
The government also wants to guarantee gender equality in line with the constitution, development objectives and international treaties, in recognition of women's role and sacrifice particularly during the 1990-91 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
Kuwaiti women play a leading role in the public and private sectors, occupying executive positions, as well as being excellent representatives as ambassadors and ministers. (end)
