(MENAFN) The US military conducted a successful helicopter raid in eastern Syria on Saturday, resulting in the capture of a high-ranking Daesh operative and two of his associates, according to a statement released by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday. The raid, which was carried out late on Saturday, targeted Hudayfah al Yemeni, a senior figure within the terrorist organization, and was part of a broader effort to disrupt Daesh's ability to carry out attacks both in the Middle East and further afield.
The statement from CENTCOM emphasized the importance of the operation, noting that the capture of al Yemeni and his associates would significantly disrupt the group's ability to plan and execute attacks. The successful raid was also notable for the fact that no civilians were harmed or killed during the operation, according to the statement.
This latest raid comes on the heels of another successful US military operation against Daesh in Syria earlier this month, in which a senior Daesh leader, Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad Al-Jabouri, was reportedly killed. The US military identified Al-Jabouri as being responsible for planning attacks by the group in Europe and Turkey, as well as for developing Daesh's leadership structure in Turkey.
The success of these operations is likely to be seen as a significant blow to Daesh's leadership and operational capabilities, particularly as the group seeks to reestablish itself following its territorial defeat in Syria and Iraq. While Daesh's ability to carry out attacks remains a concern for authorities across the region and beyond, the US military's continued targeting of the group's leaders and operatives is likely to have a significant impact on its ability to carry out large-scale attacks.
