Turkey pledges to ban re-export of Western goods to Russia amid US sanctions warning

(MENAFN) In recent years, Turkey has struggled to balance its relationship with Russia and its NATO membership. The country’s stance on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been a major point of tension with the United States and other NATO allies. The latest development in this ongoing saga is Turkey’s pledge to ban the re-export of Western goods to Russia, a move that has drawn the attention of the US State Department.

According to reports, Turkey has been “very clear” about its intentions to ban the re-export of sanctioned Western goods to Russia. This decision came after the US State Department warned Turkey about complying with sanctions. While the ban on re-exporting Western goods to Russia is a significant move, Turkey will still export domestic products to Russia.

The move to ban re-exports to Russia is seen as a step to ease tensions with the US and other NATO allies. However, Turkey’s continuing neutrality over the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains a major source of concern for its allies. Turkey has been criticized for not condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which has caused tension with the US and other NATO members.

The Istanbul Ferrous and Nonferrous Metals Exporters Association announced on March 20 that the Turkish government provided companies with a list of foreign goods that are prohibited from being sent to Russia. This announcement came soon after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Ankara, indicating a possible US role in the decision.

The ban on re-exports does not cover goods made in Turkey, which contain components from other countries that can still be exported to Russia without limitations. This exemption raises questions about Turkey’s commitment to complying with sanctions, which may prompt the US to closely monitor Turkish trade data with Russia in the coming months.
