Hoverboard Recall Issued After Fatal Fire Incident

(MENAFN) After a tragic incident in which two girls died in a house fire, a maker of electric mobility products has recalled one of its hoverboard models due to potential fire hazards. Jetson Electric has recalled 53,000 units of its Jetson Rogue self-balancing hoverboards after its lithium-ion battery pack was found to be capable of overheating and causing fires.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall following an investigation into the April 2022 fire in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, in which the hoverboard was identified as the "point of origin." The Hellertown Borough fire marshal determined that the hoverboard was responsible for the fire that claimed the lives of two sisters, aged 10 and 15.

While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, the CPSC has stated that the hoverboard's battery pack is capable of overheating and causing fires. The agency has urged consumers to stop using the affected hoverboards immediately and to contact Jetson Electric for a free repair or replacement.

The recall is a significant development in the ongoing debate over the safety of hoverboards and other personal transportation devices. The use of lithium-ion batteries in such products has raised concerns about the potential for fires and explosions, and several high-profile incidents have resulted in injuries and deaths.

As the use of personal transportation devices continues to grow, it is likely that regulators will continue to scrutinize their safety and take action to address potential hazards. The recall of the Jetson Rogue hoverboard serves as a reminder of the importance of product safety and the need for manufacturers to take responsibility for the safety of their products.
