Missing Tigers Found After Tornado Damages Georgia Zoo

(MENAFN) A Georgia zoo is recovering after a tornado damaged the park on Saturday night, forcing officials to close for the day on Sunday. Pine Mountain Animal Safari in Troup County posted on Facebook that they sustained damage and were working to keep their team and animals safe. The Troup County Sheriff's Office received a report from the zoo about an "unaccounted" tiger inside the park. Later on Sunday morning, the sheriff's office announced that both missing tigers had been captured and returned to a secure enclosure.

The zoo posted an update on Facebook, stating that the tornado had caused "extensive damage" to the park, but no animals or employees were injured. While several animal enclosures were breached, the zoo reassured residents that the tigers were safe. The zoo added that the two tigers had briefly escaped but were tranquilized and returned to their enclosure.

The South has been hit with severe weather this weekend, with a deadly tornado claiming at least 26 lives in Mississippi and Alabama. In Georgia, a tornado warning was issued for parts of Southern Georgia, including Troup County, and the sheriff's office received reports of trees and power lines down. The sheriff's office advised residents to avoid traveling if possible and warned that Verizon cell service was interrupted.

While the incident at Pine Mountain Animal Safari may seem minor in comparison to the devastation caused by the tornadoes in other parts of the South, it highlights the importance of disaster preparedness and the need to ensure the safety of both humans and animals in the event of severe weather. The zoo's quick response in accounting for the missing tigers and reassuring the public of their safety is commendable and serves as a reminder of the importance of effective communication during emergencies.
