Severe Tornadoes, Strong Thunderstorms Cause Devastation in Mississippi

(MENAFN) Over the weekend, severe tornadoes and strong thunderstorms swept through Mississippi, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The storm included a tornado that caused damage for nearly 100 kilometers northeast of Jackson, sweeping through the rural towns of Silver City and Rolling Fork at 113 kilometers per hour without weakening and racing towards Alabama.

The damage was extensive, with at least 25 people confirmed dead and dozens more injured. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported four people missing as search and rescue teams combed through the destruction looking for survivors in Silver City. Mississippi resident Rodney Porter described the devastation he witnessed, stating that he smelled natural gas and heard people screaming for help in the dark. "Houses are gone, houses stacked on top of houses with vehicles on top of that," he said. Photographs of the destruction showed entire buildings left in rubble and cars turned over on their sides as people climbed through the debris in darkness.

President Biden called the images from Mississippi "heartbreaking" and stated that the government will do everything they can to help those affected. [2] The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is coordinating with state and local partners to provide assistance to those impacted by the storm.

The recovery process may take some time as officials assess the full extent of the damage from the tornadoes and strong thunderstorms that hit the South and Midwest over the weekend. Kentucky was also heavily impacted, with at least 74 people confirmed dead and dozens more still missing.

Natural disasters like these serve as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and response efforts. It is important to have a plan in place to protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of a disaster. Stay updated on weather alerts and emergency information, and follow the guidance of local authorities to stay safe.
