Germany Criticizes Israel Over Law Allowing Restoration of Illegal Settlements

(MENAFN) Germany has criticized the Israeli government over a new law that allows for the restoration of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The German Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the "dangerous step" and warned that it could worsen the already tense security situation in the region.

The law, passed on Tuesday, allows Israelis to resettle in four outposts that were evacuated in 2005 under former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan from the Gaza Strip. Germany argued that the decision contradicts the intention of the agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinians and also violates international law.

The German Foreign Ministry reiterated its long-held position against Israeli settlement expansions in the occupied Palestinian territories. It emphasized that the construction of settlements is illegal under international law and jeopardizes future negotiations for peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Germany's statement highlights the international community's concerns over Israel's settlement policies and their impact on the prospects for peace in the region. It also underscores the importance of upholding international law and previous agreements in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
