EU Ambassador to US Stresses Unity in Supporting Ukraine Despite Economic Sanctions on Russia

(MENAFN) According to the EU Ambassador to the United States, Stavros Lambrinidis, each European Union (EU) sanctions package against Russia reduces the economies of EU member states by tens of billions of euros. Despite this, the 27 member states remain united in their support of Ukraine and in holding the Russian Federation accountable for its aggression. Lambrinidis made this statement during an Atlantic Council discussion panel on Monday, as reported by Ukrinform.
The ambassador emphasized the critical importance of the latest 10th package of EU sanctions against Russia, which imposed export bans worth an additional €11 billion. Lambrinidis noted that passing the package requires the agreement of the leaders of all 27 EU countries and is not as easy as a presidential signature, as is the case in the United States. He added that the support for Ukraine and Ukrainians is the most crucial piece of the puzzle in passing these sanctions.
Lambrinidis stated that the EU still needs to respond to the global crisis caused by the Russian war and the challenges of food security, energy crisis, and the war's impact on African, Latin American, and Asian countries. He highlighted that the joint effort of supporting Ukraine is not solely the responsibility of the United States and Europe, as other nations also contribute massively.
The ambassador stressed that all EU nations firmly believe that an autocrat with nuclear weapons must not emerge victorious. Failure to prevent this outcome would deal a severe blow to both U.S. and European democracies for decades to come. Lambrinidis clarified that the situation in Europe is not about the West waging a war against Russia. Instead, it is about the West, East, North, and East coming together in support of Ukraine and the UN Charter.
