EU to impose sanctions on individuals involved in abduction of Ukrainian children

(MENAFN) The European Union is set to introduce a new set of sanctions against Russia, which includes restrictive measures against individuals involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children. As reported by EUobserver, the new package of sanctions targets 62 individuals who are believed to be responsible for various offenses, including military personnel, local politicians, propagandists, and more.

One of the sanctions' key elements is the inclusion of three Russian politicians, Lenara Ivanova, Vyacheslav Dukhin, and Tatiana Moskalkova, who allegedly helped organize mass abductions of Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. These politicians will face a visa ban and asset freeze, along with other individuals on the list.

The EU is set to provide "evidence packages" accompanying the blacklist to ensure that the list would stand up to legal challenges in the European Court of Justice. This move will make it more likely that those named on the list will end up facing prosecution in any post-war tribunals.

The new sanctions list is in addition to the 1,412 Russians already on the EU's sanctions list. This move by the EU is part of its ongoing efforts to exert pressure on Russia, which is occupying the Crimean Peninsula and involved in a long-running conflict in eastern Ukraine.

On February 17, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, revealed that about 150,000 Ukrainian children have been illegally abducted and taken to Russia. The sanctions against individuals involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children are part of the EU's efforts to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
