(MENAFN- Khaama Press) US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West says that in a meeting with the heads of aid organizations in Geneva, the general consensus was that the Taliban's policies threaten the delivery of aid to millions of people in Afghanistan.
In his visit to Switzerland, Thomas West met with the leaderships of IOM-UN Migration, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other humanitarian aid groups.
US Special Representative for Afghanistan took on Twitter and said that during his meeting with the heads of humanitarian aid organizations in Geneva, the unified agreement was that the Taliban's policies jeopardize the delivery of vital aid to millions of people across Afghanistan.
Mr. West has emphasized that the human rights situation especially for women and girls has deteriorated – they have no access to work and education. He further added that the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan should be supported under the country's ruling regime.
The recent gender-based restrictions issued by the Islamic Emirate authorities barring women from accessing university education and working with non-governmental aid organizations prompted worldwide criticisms.
In response to the bans, renowned humanitarian aid groups and foreign governments called on the Taliban regime to lift the restrictions and allow Afghan girls and women to get an education, work with aid organizations and participate in public life.
On the contrary, the Taliban authorities have not yet shown any flexibility in this matter – emphasizing the need for creating a pure Islamic environment before allowing women and girls to return to educational institutions and workplaces.
Taliban's recent move has triggered a large number of aid organizations to stop their life-saving operations across the country during these difficult economic times. Pushing on the implementation of the group's extremely strict policies has already negatively influenced the delivery of much-need humanitarian aid to millions of people in Afghanistan.
