Riyadh – Asdaf News:

According to Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, the 26th UAE National Environment Day is an occasion that strengthens environmental efforts to preserve natural resources, ecosystems, and biological diversity.

Almheiri thanked President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his unwavering support of initiatives aimed at environmental preservation and sustainable development in the United Arab Emirates, continuing the approach of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was manifested in the adoption of integrated policies, legislation, and strategies aimed at achieving sustainability in all sectors.

Additionally, she expressed her gratitude to Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates for their support of initiatives to protect and improve the environment in the United Arab Emirates as well as HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.

The Minister emphasized in her statement that commemorating the 26th National Environment Day is in line with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed's proclamation that 2023 will be the“Year of Sustainability.” This was done in anticipation of the UAE hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) this year in Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12.

According to her, the theme for this year,“Towards a Sustainable Future,” which is also the theme for the Year of Sustainability, emphasizes the need to find realistic and practical solutions to climate and environmental challenges in order to ensure a sustainable future for future generations. This includes stepping up efforts to reduce emissions, adopting the newest technology, and working to adapt to the effects of climate change through a realistic and thorough methodology.

Almheiri stressed that the UAE attaches great importance to the involvement of all segments of society in these efforts and to contribute to creating a better future for humanity, and to explore innovative solutions that are economically applicable to transform challenges into opportunities, in line with achieving the vision of the“UAE Centennial 2071′′.

She emphasized the significant efforts made by the nation to preserve biodiversity in line with its climate ambitions formulated by the wise leadership's vision of creating opportunities for sustainable economic and social growth, as well as the launch of the National Strategy for Food Security, which aims to develop a comprehensive strategy for reducing carbon emissions. The UAE was the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to ratify the Paris Agreement, she said.

In order to address the effects of climate change and their ripple effects on other sectors, the minister welcomed engagement from the public and corporate sectors as well as from people.
