Death of Police officer in fire as demonstrations in Peru continue

(MENAFN) The first Police officer to pass away since protests demanding President Pedro Castillo's impeachment started last month was acknowledged to have died by the Lima administration on Wednesday. In Juliaca, a city in the south, protesters ambushed a patrol car after 17 local residents were slain in a clash with the police the day before.

According to Peru's Interior Ministry, Officer Jose Luis Soncco Quispe's charred remains were discovered next to the police car that was attacked on Tuesday morning. Ronald Villasante Toque, his companion, was hurt and transferred to a hospital in Lima. He claimed that around 300 persons had engaged in a "savage attack" on the police car in a telephone call to headquarters.

Initial reports stated that the assailants had also taken the officers' body armor, as well as their weaponry, including an AKM assault rifle, two service pistols, and body armor. Later, the police claimed that the firearms had really been discovered in the burned-out patrol car.

Southeast of Peru, close to Lake Titicaca and the Bolivian border, is where Juliaca is located. In battles with Peruvian National Police (PNP) on Monday, there were at least 17 civilian fatalities and 30 further injuries. In reference to interim President Dina Boluarte, protestors wrote handwritten messages and placed them on the caskets of the deceased during the funeral procession on Wednesday. The cards stated, "Dina murdered me with bullets."
